Deadline has confirmed that Simon Kinberg will be directing X-Men: Dark Phoenix today after the news was long rumored. The film will mark Kinberg’s directorial debut and will focus on Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey and the Dark Phoenix saga storyline.
Kinberg has been involved in nearly all of FOX’s superhero films (including the Fantastic Four attempts) and co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, which was the last time the studio attempted the Phoenix storyline. While Fantastic Four and X-Men: The Last Stand don’t grant much hope for Kinberg, it cannot be overlooked that he was also a producer on both Logan and Deadpool. I don’t have full confidence in Kinberg helming the film as of yet and I find it a risky move on FOX’s part to give a first-time director such a major film.
With Kinberg’s directorial announcement, Deadline also confirms Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Kodi-Smit McPhee, and Alexandra Shipp will all be returning. Jessica Chastain is also reportedly in talks to play the film’s villain.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hit theaters on November 2nd, 2018.
